Do Tarot Cards Still Have a Place in Our World?

In a world increasingly jaded by technology and progress, its easy to scoff at people who blindly entrust their lives to a deck of cards. We tell ourselves, we are rational, clear-headed people, so how can randomly shuffled cards spread on the table possibly answer all our lifes questions.

Tarot cards have had a crucial and inseparable influence in mysticism and the occult. They first arrived sometime in fifteenth century Italy, but it was not until late 17th or 18th century that tarot cards began to be used in divination. The tarot cards that we know today have gone through a long and evolution, from the pictures, symbolisms, procedures, purposes, and meanings. It is interesting to note that tarot cards were originally used in a game, with 21 trump cards, four queens, and a fool added to a normal deck, which totals to 78 cards in all. But it is unclear exactly how tarot branched out from a simple mind-diverting game into the fragile business of looking back into past lives, foretelling the future, and answering questions.

Archetypes

The highly-respected psychologist Carl Jung has always considered tarot as an alternative psychotherapy. For him, the rich imagery inherent in every tarot card represents archetypes of human personality and situations. Archetypes are basic models or prototypes of people that embody a defined set of characteristics. The Emperor card, for instance, can be thought of as representing the patriarch or the father figure.

Over the years, we piece together various archetypes according to our needs. These archetypes are embedded in our unconscious and thus they can affect our actions and thoughts without our knowing. Consequently, our choices of tarot cards when we pick them out from that innocent deck reveal our feelings, attitudes, and even fears towards such figures in our lives. For instance, we may not know it, but we have always shied from responsibilities and commitment in lives whenever there is a father figure looming in the background, etc.

Tarot cards offer an alternative language system through which we can access our Unconscious. Therefore, we do not just randomly pick tarot cards, or blindly entrust our lives to them. Every moment of our lives, we lay ourselves bare with the choices we make, even for something as papery as tarot cards.

The Missing Tarot in The Skeptics World

Tarot readings then should not be dismissed as just some pretend psychic business exploiting a persons gullibility. The art of tarot cards is subtle, delicate, yet powerful. It is energised by centuries of symbolism and meaning created, expounded, and developed by people who dared to see beyond. For them, the Arcane that lies on the fringes of human experience holds the secrets we need to survive.

Before we question the legitimacy of tarot cards, we should first look into the person who wants to inquire about himself/herself. Will they see to believe, or believe to see?

What Lawyers Don't Want You To Know About Divorce

The worst thing you can do is go to a lawyer without first becoming informed and prepared. It is not difficult to learn what you need to know, but very dangerous not to. Here's why:

1. In a divorce, the law is concerned with only three thingsproperty, support, and parenting arrangements for minor children. That's it; that's all. If there is no legal opposition (papers filed in court) to your requests on these three subjects, getting a divorce is simply a matter of red-tape and paperwork, easy to do. The trouble comes when parties can't agree about these issues and do things that do more harm than good - like taking the divorce into a lawyer's office and into court while the disagreements are still unresolved.

2. Very few divorces hinge on valid legal issues. Over many decades, after millions of California divorces, almost every conceivable issue has already been decided in great detail and can be looked up in our enormous body of cases and statutes. This means there is only rarely a fact situation where we don't know ahead of time pretty much what any judge would order, so there's really no good legal reason for people to disagree, at least none worth the financial and emotional cost. The reason people argue is not about the law but about emotional things like hurt, fear and anger. Even more, it is because arguing is the fundamental nature of law practice and the legal system.

3. There are no solutions for divorce problems in a law office or court room. Divorce problems are almost entirely personal and emotional, but the law has no tools that can help. None. Not any. As to lawyers, nothing in law school prepares them to help people resolve disagreements based on emotional upset.

4. Retaining a lawyer almost always makes things worse rather than better. Worse than merely having no solutions for your divorce problems, our legal system - known as the adversarial system of justice - is based on conflict. It originated with trial by combat in the Middle Ages when people with a disagreement would battle before a representative of the King and the person who survived was right. A hair more civilized today, parties do legal battle in a courtroom before a judge and try to win a decision. When you take a divorce into the legal system to "settle" disagreements, things invariably get worse (no solutions there, remember?) and the level of conflict and cost go way up. Even when it's over, the parties come away broke, unhappy, disinclined to comply with orders that have been imposed, and less able to get on with rebuilding their lives or raise children cooperatively.

5. The things you can do yourself are far superior to anything a lawyer can do for you. The lawyer has no legal tools or training that can help you settle disagreements and get on with your life. But because the problems are entirely personal, between you and your spouse, there are many very specific things you can do to help reduce tension, avoid conflict, and negotiate or mediate a fair settlement. Tomorrow belongs to Asia's Entrepreneurs?

I'm looking to buy a rental property in Oxford - near to where I live. Last week I browsed the web sites of six local estate agents, clicked the "contact us" button of all six, asked one of two questions and to be added to their mailing lists.

Within two hours one had called me, discussed my situation and given excellent advice and service. As for the others - nothing, zero, not a dickie bird - after seven days.

Unfortunately that experience is not unusual in Europe or in the US.

It's the small details that delineate excellent service from the rest and for me this is a prime example. Guess which agent is going to get my business.

In Asia that attention to detail and outstanding service simply runs in the blood - and Singapore is simply the world leader. Singapore has a multicultural population of 4.5 million, no natural resources and no history of empire but it has a GNP per head almost identical to that of the European Union and growing. Singapores success has been built on service and delighting the customer - always and in a manner unparalleled anywhere else in the world. From the legendary service and memorable experience of flying Singapore Airlines (now the most profitable airline in the world - is there a connection I wonder?), to the remarkable performance metrics achieved at Changi airport (for example: no waiting at immigration and a matter of honour that your bag gets to the belt before you do), through the delight of staying in a Singapore hotel to the courtesy of taxi drivers and in-store sales staff.

Contrast that with the experience often felt when staying in a hotel in the UK - memorable only for a feeling of having been ripped off; or of riding in a New York taxi where, as often as not, you have to give the directions - that is if youre lucky enough to get a cab driver that speaks English.

Whilst Singapore is currently pre-eminent in matters of service and customer delight I see many other Asian nations aspiring to knock them off that top slot.

This then is the background out of which Asia's entrepreneurs are growing - and growing fast. A background quite simply of living in customers shoes and striving to delight them each and every time you impact with them.

I recently spoke at the "New Wave Leadership" conference in Singapore and had the privilege of sharing the platform with some of the top entrepreneurs, CEOs and business thinkers in the region - people like Ron Sim of OSIM. This is a business, under Ron's guidance, that is achieving fabulous worldwide growth and excellent returns in a market dominated by the big Japanese corporates. Sunny Verghese of Olam International was another memorable speaker - sharing his story of his company's transition from a green-field start-up to a global leader in the supply chain management of agricultural products and food ingredients.

These then are the entrepreneurs to whom the global future belongs. Why? - not just because they have customer service in their blood but they have other unique skills also. For example they seem to have an effortless ability to sell globally that others do not. Whilst we can all bring to mind successful global corporations from many national backgrounds my experience is that there are national "fault lines" that become apparent particularly when you look at smaller middle sized companies and the way they operate.

In Europe, for example, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and the UK are better than most at doing business around the world with successful major corporations like Nokia, Philips and Glaxo Smith Kline respectively but among smaller companies I still find a reluctance to do everything possible to make it easy for their overseas customers to buy from them. All too often, for example, I come across companies that are only prepared to sell in euros or pounds and will not contemplate selling to their overseas customers in their own local currency - no matter how strong it is.

Similarly US companies will certainly "talk the talk" on service and customer focus but all too often it is only skin deep and they fail to "walk the talk". In the US exporting is all too frequently seen as what you do when the home market takes a tumble - and many US companies really do seem to believe in a "one size fits all" mentality and fail to even attempt to understand the local business needs. When Disneyland Paris was in development Disney Corporation executives would not accept the local advice that in France you simply have to include wine on the lunch menu in any restaurant. Only when the business came perilously close to chapter 11 did this and other adjustments to the US model to adapt to local needs get belatedly made.

The Japanese fault line seems also to be an reluctance to adopt and adapt to local conditions - and I've also seen something of a nervousness and an insecurity in Japanese executives when they are outside their own country - mirrored also by middle sized German company executives and this leads them to a lack of perception of local business cultures.

Asian, and particularly Singaporean, business leaders seem immune from such "fault lines" - not only do they normally have the ability to speak both Mandarin Chinese and English giving them immediate access to both the largest and fastest-growing economies of the world - but also they have neither the arrogance to believe their business model is the only one nor the lack of perception when away from their home market of others. They appear to follow the textbook method and learn about the local business culture, put on that coat and then define a strategy for success in that market that is then driven through to success. It is extremely impressive.

When you add to all that the endemic culture in the region of continuous education and professional development plus the support of governments not seen in a majority of countries you have to admit that the rest of the world has a real challenge on its hands unless it shapes up, and shapes up quickly.

Okay, I hear you say, so you are in love with Asia and particularly Singapore, but you must have some areas of concern also

Well, yes I do. It's to do with families and family businesses - which of course is how just about every business starts out in life. I was speaking to the CEO of an advertising agency in Singapore recently and he told me that his very best designer had come to him that morning to say that she was resigning. He, of course, asked why and what he had to do to keep her. She said that she was joining the family business and that her father had told her that it was time and that she could not demure. The business is in window joinery and you do have to wonder if firstly her talents are right for the business and secondly whether she will be fulfilled.

I work with many family businesses, indeed I'm a non-executive director of two, and I firmly believe that whilst family members should be enabled to join the business if they have both a desire and appropriate talent, compulsion is not in anybody's long-term interest - including that of the business. It may simply be a generational phenomena but I believe Asian family businesses need to think about this.

They perhaps need to learn from the mistakes of the past. We have an expression in Britain: "clogs to clogs in three generations". This refers to the footwear that used to be worn by the working man and the fact that many family companies whilst highly successful under the entrepreneurs that conceived them are then destroyed by the next two family generations.

Josiah Wedgwood, of pottery fame, was one such 19th century entrepreneur. He was said to have the flair and creativity of the French, the marketing skills of the Americans, the manufacturing talent of the Japanese and the financial acumen of the Swiss. His was a truly world-class entrepreneurial business that was pre-eminent in its day but within two generations it had all but disappeared. Entrepreneurs by definition are risk-takers and it can often be that subsequent generations are naturally risk averse perhaps arguing that they want to protect what they have inherited. This alone can cause the rapid decline in the fortunes of the business unless the founder has put in place a very strong business culture that can survive the generations.

In this business world we are now in mediocrity is not tolerated - all of us believe as consumers or business buyers that we have an absolute right to buy excellent products and services. It is clear therefore that increasingly the differentiator between the successful business and the rest is not the quality and performance of the basic "product" thats a given - but the quality of the experience the customer has - the "wow" factor.

I see Asian companies get more "wows" than most and the rest of the world needs to take note.

So those five estate agents in Oxford you need to get your act together - and just maybe you could then conquer the world but only if the Asian entrepreneurs let you!

The Leo Wanta Saga, Pt. 35: More Articles and Information Surface About Leo Wanta's Past

Digging into the Leo Wanta story a little deeper, several old newspaper articles and interviews surfaced from the late 1990's filling in a few more pieces of the mysterious puzzle surrounding the man who has been dubbed The $27.5 Trillion Dollar Man.

Two of the articles were written in 1997 about Wanta's Wisconsin tax evasion case by the late Sarah McClendon, a senior White House correspondent who covered 10 Presidents.

Several other interviews, one in particular written around the same time by a lesser known journalist, severely questioned Wanta's credibility, calling him an international high finance con man instead of a trusted former Treasury agent fighting for the rights of the American people, as he has claimed and been depicted in numerous recent articles.

Although the full details of Wanta's past may never be fully known, those who believe him claim he is an honorable, God-faring man who has uncovered and trying to expose trillions of offshore money stolen by the last three Presidential administrations.

However, those more skeptical of Wanta's true intentions claim he is either being used by the powers that be or working together with them for a larger purpose unknown to the people. If this be the case, who the real controllers in the background also remain unknown, but several researchers point to the Vatican and the Jesuit Order.

As background, Wanta assumed the name, The $27.5 Trillion Dollar Man , after recently going public with an incredible story of huge offshore slush funds and CIA undercover intrigue, including a failed attempt to arrest international criminal Marc Rich and $250 million handed over by Wanta to Vince Foster in Switzerland only two weeks before his untimely death in a Washington D.C. park.

As the Wanta story unfolded during the last year, he claimed to be the legal trustor of more than $27.5 trillion in offshore money amassed after he was assigned by President Reagan to destabilize the Russian currency at the end of the Cold War.

After Reagan left the scene, Wanta claimed to be at odds with the last three presidential administrations since their intentions were to use the money for their own covert purposes instead of using the money like Reagan intended for the betterment of the American people.

For his steadfast loyalty, Wanta was first jailed in Switzerland for 133 days and then spent the better part of a decade in a Wisconsin jail for what he has called a bogus tax evasion charge.

Upon his release about a year and a half ago, he set out on a quest to repatriate the money and in June supposedly entered into a deal with U.S. authorities to return $4.5 trillion for the betterment of the U.S. economy.

But instead of the money being used properly, it has been supposedly languishing in either a Bank of America or Citibank account, being held up by the Bush administration who Wanta claims is using it for their own nefarious purposes.

While waiting for the money to be released or while watching the story be used as another ploy to help further a downfall of the U.S economy, here are the McClendon 1997 articles and several others about Wanta reprinted in order to fill in some of the missing gaps.

It should be noted in response to the article highly critical of Wanta by Mike Miller of the Capitol Times, Wanta has claimed the target of a massive CIA smear campaign as well as being targeted with numerous death threats.
