Table Decoration

FOR the young and inexperienced we state a few rules for table decoration. If you have furnished your dining-room to accord not only with your taste, but the scale upon which you intend living, be careful that the dining-table never strikes a false note, never "gets out of the picture" by becoming too important as to setting or menu. You may live very formally in your town house and very simply, without any ostentation, in the country, but be sure that in all of your experimenting with table decoration you observe above all the law of appropriateness.

Your decoration, flowers, fruit, character of bowl or dish which holds them, or objet d'art used in place of either; linen or lace, china, glass and silver, each and all must be in keeping. The money value has nothing whatever to do with this question of appropriateness, when considered by an artist decorator.

Remember that in decorating, things are classified according to their color value, their lines and the purpose for which they are intended. The dining table is to eat at, therefore it should primarily hold only such things as are required for the serving of the meal. So your real decoration should be your silver, glass and china, with its background of linen or lace. The central decoration, if of flowers or fruit, must be in a bowl or dish decorative in the same sense that the rest of the tableware is.

Flowers should be kept in the same key as your room. One may do this and yet have infinite variety. Tall stately lilies, American Beauty roses, great bowl of gardenias and orchids are for stately rooms.

Your small house, flat or bungalow require modest garden flowers such as daffodils, jonquils, tulips, lilies-of-the-valley, snapdragons, one long-stemmed rose in a vase, or a cluster of shy moss-buds or nodding tea-roses.

A table set with art in the key of a small mnage and on a scale of simple living, often strikes the note of perfection from the expert's point of view because perfect of its kind and suitable for the occasion. This appropriateness is what makes your "smart" table quite as it makes your "smart" woman.

Wedgwood cream color ware "C. C." is beautiful and always good form. For those wanting color, the same famous makers of England have an infinite variety, showing lovely designs.

Unless you are a collector in the museum sense, press into service all of your beautiful possessions. If you have to go without them, let it be when you no longer own them, and not because they are hoarded out of sight. You know the story of the man who bought a barrel of apples and each day carefully selected and ate those that were rotten, feeling the necessity of not being wasteful.

When the barrel was empty he realized that he had deliberately wasted all his good apples by not eating one! Let this be a warning to him who would save his treasures.

If you love antiques and have joyously hunted them down and, perhaps, denied yourself other things to obtain them, you are the person to use them, even though the joy be transient and they perish at the hand of a careless man or maidservant Remember, posterity will have its own "fads" and prefer adding the pleasure of pursuit to that of mere ownership. So bring out your treasures and use them!

As there are many kinds of dining rooms, each good if planned and worked out with an art instinct, so there are many kinds of tables. The usual sort is the round, or square, extension table, laid with fine damask and set with conventional china, glass and silver, rare in quality and distinguished in design.

For those who prefer the unusual there are oblong, squarely built Jacobean and Italian refectory tables. With these one makes a point of showing the rich color of the time-worn wood and carving, for the old Italian tables often have the beveled edge and legs carved. When this style of table is used, the wood instead of a cloth is our background, and a "runner" with doilies of Old Italian lace takes the place of linen.

In Feudal Days, when an entire household, master and retainers, sat in the baronial hall "above and below the salt," tables were made of great length. When used out of their original setting, they must be cut down to suit modern conditions.

In Krakau, Poland, the writer often dined at one of these feudal boards, which had been in our hostess's family for several hundred years. To get it into her dining room a large piece had been cut out at the centre and the two ends pushed together.

For those who live informally, delightfully decorative china can be had at low prices. It was once made only for the peasants, and comes to us from Italy, France, Germany and England. This fact reminds us that when we were traveling in Southern Hungary and were asked to dine with a Magyar farmer, out on the windy Piista, instead of their usual highly colored pottery, gay with crude, but decorative flowers, they honored us by covering the table with American ironstone china! The Hungarian crockery resembles the Brittany and Italian ware, and some of it is most attractive when rightly set

When once the passion to depart from beaten paths seizes us it is very easy to make mistakes. Therefore to the housekeeper, accustomed to conventional china, but weary of it, we would commend as a safe departure, modern Wedgwood and Italian reproductions of classic models, which come in exquisite shapes and in a delicious soft cream tone. If one prefers, it is possible to get these varieties decorated with charming designs in artistic colorings, as previously stated.

For eating meals out of doors, or in "sun-rooms," where the light is strong, the dark peasant pottery, like Brittany, Italian and Hungarian, is very effective on dull-blue linen, heavy cream linen or coarse lace, such as the peasants make.

Copper luster, with its dark metallic surface, is enchanting on dark wood or colored linen of the right tone.

Your table must be a picture composed on artistic lines. That is, it must combine harmony of line and color and above all, appropriateness. Gradually one acquires skill in inventing unusual effects; but only the adept can go against established rules of art and yet produce a pleasing ensemble.

We can all recall exceptions to this rule for simplicity, beautiful, artistic tables, covered with rare and entrancing objects, irrelevant, but delighting the eye. Some will instantly recall Clyde Fitch's dinners in this connection, but here let us emphasize the dictum that for a great master of the art of decoration there need be no laws.

A careful study of the Japanese principles of decoration is an ideal way of learning the art of simplicity. It is impossible to deny the immense decorative value of a single objet d'art, as one flower in a simple vase, provided it is given the correct background.

Background in decoration is like a pedal point in music; it must support the whole fabric, whether you are planning a house, a room Or a table.

Drop Down Menus - Be a Flash Menu Master!

Flash websites generally arent known for their ease of use. Nearly every site has a non-standard user interface, which can mean trouble for your surfing guests as they spend precious time getting used to your user interface.

One interface that most people whove used a computer for more than 20 minutes can handle is the drop down menu. Quick and easy to make when you know what your doing, theyre great for sites and projects that are built with expansion in mind. Add another item, add another option in one of the menus.

This example is actually based on a drop down menu flash file that can be found at http://www.jake-man.co.uk/ , a personal site of mine I made about video games consoles. As I collected more consoles, I needed to be able to add them to specific genre, based on the consoles processor. The drop down menu proved a great way to handle this, as I could easily add more items in as and when needed.

The clever part of this drop down menu is the invisible button, one of every flash designers best weapons! No matter what project Im working on, I end up using an invisible button somewhere.

Basically an invisible button is simply a flash button, with no content in the first 3 frames, just one object/shape in the hit area. You can expand on this to add sounds in the over stage, so as a user rolls over the invisible button, a sound plays. There is a lot you can use them for, so its good to start using them as soon as possible.

What do I need before I start?

Youll need Macromedia Flash 5, which is on the cover CD

How hard is it?

Easy a knowledge of buttons and frame labels and movie clips should be all you need.

How long will it take?

10-15 minutes

Walk through: A 14 stage walk through of the software with a grab for each

stage and 50-60 words.

Stage 1

First things first decide the size of your movie, frame rate and background colour. You can change these later, but it may give you some headaches if you drastically change scene sizes.

Ive chosen a black background, a frame rate of 21 fps and a size of 120 pixels wide by 400 pixels tall.

Stage 2

Its time to add our main menu options. For my console-related site, Ive grouped everything by processor. 8 Bit, 16 Bit and so on. Add each menu option as separate pieces of text, might as well choose the font and colour now.

Stage 3

Select the first menu option, and hit F8 (or select Insert>convert to symbol ) and name the movieclip something useful. For the 8 Bit piece of text, Ill name the movieclip text-8bit. Do the same with all the other separate menu option text.

Stage 4

Now select the 8 Bit movie clip, and make another movie clip by hitting F8 again. Name this one menu-8bit. Edit the freshly created menu-8bit by double clicking on it (confusing at first, I know!) in the library and set up the layers as shown in the picture.

Stage 5

Were now ready to start working on how our menu will behave. We need one frame for an inactive menu state, and one frame for when the menu item is clicked on. Add keyframes on frame 5, and add a label named closed in frame 1, and a label named open in frame 10.

Stage 6

We need a little bit of actionscript on these 2 labelled frames, nothing major, just a stop command to keep the movie from rolling along on its own. Add the command to each frame as shown in the picture.

Stage 7

Time to make our invisible button. Create a rectangle in a blank layer underneath the 8 Bit menu option. Select the rectangle and hit F8 again, give the button a name, I suggest button-invisible menu. Edit this button, by double clicking on its name in the library.

Stage 8

Heres the clever part simply grab the keyframe in the up state of the button and drag it over to the hit frame. This should result in a blank keyframe on the up, over and down states, but a rectangle in the hit area.

The button will give no visible feedback in this state, but will act as a hot spot. Great for adding buttons to Photos or artwork

Stage 9

but we want to make a menu. So we need to add something in the rollover frame of the invisible button, so copy the rectangle from the hit area and select Edit>Paste in Place to duplicate the menu. Now you can change the colour, the transparency, add a sound effect etc. Do the same in the down frame too

Stage 10

So we have our menu option in the first frame, complete with a button that needs a script so click on the button once, open the actionscript window, and double click on the Go To command in Basic Actions. Select Type: Frame Label and enter open in the box, and uncheck the Go to And Play box.

Stage 11

In the open frame of our menu, we need to add the list of options that will appear when our 8 Bit menu is clicked on. Ive added a few names of some consoles try and keep the first list item just under where the 8 Bit would appear. Create a new layer at the very bottom and add a background square, so your menu blocks the other options when clicked.

Stage 12

In the layer beneath the menu options in the open frame Im going to drag the button-invisible menu out from the library, one for each menu option and resize them to fit. The script for each of these buttons determines where the user goes when they click in this case, Im simply going to load another web page in a frame, you can see the script in the picture.

Stage 13

Finally, when the user rolls off the menu, we want to return to the closed frame. The best way to make this happen is to have 3 or 4 huge invisible hit areas to catch the users mouse. Create another invisible button as in stage 8, only filling in the hit area, and add the script to the new button as in the picture, then duplicate twice.

Stage 14

Repeat this for each main menu option you need. I followed the whole process 4 times for my menu. Be sure to reuse the invisible buttons as often as possible, as this reduces the final file size of the movie. After all, a simple menu doesnt have to be over 200k!

Discount Kingdom

This past holiday weekend, like every one on the calendar, provided endless opportunities to SAVE! SAVE! SAVE!. If Congress has legislated a postal holiday there is an equal and AMAZING BLOWOUT! or EXTRAVAGANZA! to spend money you would have otherwise been earning that day. Just in case you can't make the actual EXTREME SALES EVENT! you can take in a PRE-HOLIDAY or POST-HOLIDAY SALES EVENT! I believe I have actually seen the before/during/after television sales campaigns inadvertently converge late at night, creating a sort of time warp shopping wonderland in which people are always giddy with delight over FANTASTIC SAVINGS! I seriously wonder if, or why, anyone would pay full price for anything anymore.

But apparently there is a story, told long, long ago, from a time since past, about a soul who paid full price, and then some, for something so glorious that it could not be passed up. Matthew's gospel recounts Jesus' words in the Parable of the Pearl of Great Value. "The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it (Matthew 13:45-46)."

Today's shoppers would call this man a fool. Why pay full price when waiting a few days, maybe a few weeks at the most, will net you the same product and keep more money in your pocket to spend elsewhere. Only a fool would pay full price, and only a bigger fool, or a crazy person, would pay more than full price. That's the problem if you let a merchant know how much you want something. They take you for all you are worth. Never let your guard down when you are trying to be a savvy shopper.

But our Biblical shopper was probably as savvy as they come because he was a merchant himself, someone who knew the ins and outs of smart bargaining and smarter purchasing for resale better than most. It's quite clear that he was on the hunt for fine peals because he knew what he was looking for and was eager to find them. He'd had success on his quests before and intended this venture to be equally successful. This merchant was no novice, but a seasoned professional striking out on a trip designed to continue building his business and his professional reputation.

Imagine his surprise then, upon discovering this one, magnificent pearl of great worth, an unexpected treasure-among-treasures right there before his eyes, but in another merchant's possession. What should he do? How should he proceed with the situation? He knows this pearl is meant for him, but he doesn't have enough money with which to purchase it. He must go home, gather all his resources and pray that no one else purchases the pearl before he can return. His one hope rests on the merchant holding his pearl (for he has now come to regard the pearl as his own) seeming oblivious to the value of the treasure he holds in his stock.

So our merchant travels home as fast as he can, counts his money, sells literally everything he owns to make up the difference and hurries back to his fellow merchant to retrieve his pearl. The other merchant feels he has made an incredible deal, selling a single pearl for an outrageously large sum, much more than he would have ever expected. He is quite surprised that his colleague was willing to pay so much, but he doesn't question the fellow's motive or integrity.

It is an interesting sort of twist, to realize that the search for the kingdom of heaven isn't about making the best business deal or appearing wise in its transaction. The kingdom of heaven isn't about putting our nose to the grindstone, living in the real world or taking advantage of whatever life offers us either. The kingdom of heaven appears more to be about discovering the mystery and wonder of God's presence among us , for us, when we bump into it on an ordinary day, even during a simple shopping trip.

Most Lawyers End Up Dead Broke

The public perception of lawyers is that they make a lot of money each year and are very wealthy.

Isn't it common knowledge that they all drive expensive foreign cars, are members of exclusive country clubs and wear expensive suits? I mean after all... anyone who is raking in $150...$250...$350...or even $500 per hour has got to be loaded. Don't you think?

The reality is most lawyers end up dead broke. Surprised? I'm not. Especially when you consider the fact that most attorneys have no clue when it comes to making money, managing it and keeping it.

Why?

Because, no one ever taught them how.

They all went to college... then graduated from law school and headed directly into a law firm to practice law. This seems pretty straightforward, doesn't it? I mean, it's kind of what you would expect them to do

The challenge is... that in those 7-years of advanced education (4 in college and 3 in law school) they were never taught how to look out for themselves financially. Instead they were learning how to help you and me. This is great for us...but in the process they short-changed themselves and their families.

Most lawyers are working long hours (55+ per week), often including weekends.

And...

The reality of those high hourly rates they charge is this...very little of those rates trickle down to them- like maybe 10-15%. The majority goes to paying overhead. Which even is a tiny solo practice can be high when you include the costs of rent, malpractice insurance, phones, computers and software, advertising, secretarial, research library, paralegals, accounting, billing, and collections... and it goes on and on.

On top of all that, you can throw in clients who are completely unappreciative of their lawyer's work and then to add insult to injury...lawyers deal with clients don't pay their bills on time or at all. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse to practice as a lawyer...you have to deal with the endless issue of cash flow or lack of it.

Is it any wonder that all lawyers don't end up dead broke?
